CANYON WALLS

City Hall, Flagstaff, Arizona. 1983

Stoneware
8’ x 8’ each panel

Commissioned by City of Flagstaff, Arizona.

Barbara Grygutis secured the commission to craft a permanent art mural titled "Canyon Walls" for the newly constructed Flagstaff City Hall in 1983. This sculpted ceramic masterpiece portrays an impressionistic interpretation of the Grand Canyon, employing vibrant reds, oranges, earth tones, subtle greens, and turquoise, all glazed to a glossy finish. Inspired by a recent journey down the Colorado River, Grygutis aimed to create a piece deeply connected to the local landscape, ensuring it would resonate with the people of Flagstaff. Strategically placed at the entrance to the city council chambers, Canyon Walls is designed for all City Hall visitors to appreciate. The selection committee, comprised of local and Arizona Commission on the Arts representatives, chose Grygutis for her ability to capture the essence of the southwest in a manner that aligns with community preferences.
