Sculpture: Aluminum, integrated light; 40’ H x 6’ D tapering to 1’ D at base

Plaza: Formed concrete, inlaid aluminum poem; 30' L x 30' W

This large iconic columnar sculpture and plaza demarcate the Spring Hill Road Station along WMATA's Metro Silver Line. The sculptural form displays shifting moiré patterns as the viewer moves about the piece— from pedestrians at ground level and above on the train platform to vehicles and bicyclists passing at varying speeds. The plaza includes an offset concentric ring design in two tones of concrete with poetry inlaid in aluminum. Three winning haiku poems were chosen for the piece at the 2011 Annual Poetry Society of Virginia Contest for the project, including works by winners Joan Ellen Casey, Lee Pelham Cotton, and Warren Meredith Harris. The pillar is illuminated in the evening to create a placemaking feature around the clock.
